Have you ever thought about
how you can take advantage of the fast growing Outdoor
Kitchen Market? As you are aware, the past decade has brought on
radical changes in this sector with traditional methods of brick and mortar construction
slowly being replaced with steel stud construction. But will the current construction methods
meet the needs of your customers?
Read the information below
and you decide.
Pros
1. Block construction is impervious to the weather.
2. Block construction can be finished in a variety of facades
such as stone, brick and stucco.
3. Block construction is fireproof and insect proof.
4. Block construction is strong.
5. Fairly low material cost.
Cons
1. Block construction is very heavy, requiring a strong footing-
a small outdoor kitchen built with this method can easily weigh 10,000 lbs and
more.
2. Block construction requires skilled masons. As a business
owner, you may be familiar with heavy turnover and qualified help becoming more
difficult to find. Training new employees is costly and time intensive, only to
find out that they leave for greener pastures with their newly acquired skills.
3. Block construction requires engineering to accommodate each
outdoor kitchen component. Each project must be carefully planned, engineered
and executed. This leaves many areas throughout the process that are prone to
mistakes. All these aspects also result in prolonging the completion of and
sometimes the overall quality of the finished project.
4. Block construction leaves little space internally due to the
thickness of the materials used, taking up what could be valuable storage
space. Local storage of kitchen utensils etc. is one of the main reasons for
building an outdoor kitchen; no more running back and forth in and out of the
house.
5. High labor cost, delays due to poor weather, and increased
transportation costs of bulky materials.
Then came steel stud
construction. The original intent was good but the products fall short when
compared to other construction methods.
Pros
1. Lightweight compared to masonry.
2. Only a moderate level of expertise to construct.
3. Available at most home good stores.
Cons
1. Galvanized studs will rust once they are cut.
2. Thin gauge material that depends on the finish board (ex.
cement board) for full structural strength. Typical 24 gauge studs are just
over a .5 millimeter thick, comparable to the thickness of your standard
fingernail.
3. Construction methods typically consist of spot welding,
riveting, or sheet rock screws all of which work but are inferior in strength
to alternate methods.
4. Construction requires engineering to accommodate each outdoor
kitchen component. Each project must be carefully planned, engineered and
executed. This leaves many areas throughout the process that are prone to
mistakes. All these aspects also result in prolonging the completion of and
sometimes the overall quality of the finished project.
5. If you’re constructing this yourself, be aware of an
assortment of required power tools, sharp edges and several weeks time in
designing and fabrication.
Now I want to introduce you
to a method that has combined the best of both worlds, a strong lightweight,
pre-engineered product from Simply Outdoorz. Our product is so unique that we have
patented it. Our goal is not to introduce an inadequate product
to compete in the market, but
rather give people a quality alternative to traditional construction methods.
Pros
1. Lightweight - for comparison to the block construction of the
same size we are 10 times lighter.
2. Framing - our framing is made with anodized industrial grade
aluminum that will never rust. Our materials our currently being used in
existing commercial and industrial applications.
3. No engineering - Our systems are pre-engineered to accommodate
your choice of grill and components with a simple adjustment and no costly
mistakes. You can feel confident that your project will come out perfect each
time and on time.
4. Strong - our framing is secured with 5/16 inch zinc plated
bolts and a heavy duty angle system. Our materials are rigid by themselves and
do not rely on the finish board for structural strength.
5. Our finish board (cement board) is anchored with stainless
steel fasteners and ¼ inch zinc plated bolts NOT
rivets.
6. Our system can be assembled in less than 1 hour with 3 simple
hand tools, and because it is a kit, there is no skilled labor required.
7. All our materials are impervious to the weather, fireproof and
insect proof.
8. Our kits can be finished in your choice of stone and brick
veneers, stucco, wood and cement overlays.
Cons
1. Price - as you shop around, you
will learn we are not the cheapest grill island out there but for a reason. The
materials that we build our island frames out of, cost us 12x more than the
steel materials used by our competition, yet our overall retail cost is only
slightly higher. That means that you the customer are getting a much better
product for only slightly more. Why do we do this? Because we know that there
are customers out there that appreciate quality at a fair price and that is who
we want as a customer.

Market Analysis
FACT:
In a recent analysis of 2002
Barbecue Shipments, the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association (HPBA)
findings indicate that the nation's move toward the outdoor kitchen is being perpetuated
by a combination of factors, not least of which is the fact that currently 60
percent of all grill owners cook outdoors year-round (a figure that rises to
nearly 70 percent for gas grill owners.) To accommodate them, an increasing
number of manufacturers are offering high-quality, all-weather outdoor cooking
appliances and heaters to enable year-round use. In addition, the study
continues, this lifestyle shift is supported by the steep growth in second
homes, an increase in new housing starts, and growing investments in home
remodeling with an emphasis on outdoor amenities.
FACT:
Donna Myers, HPBA barbecue
spokesperson, reports that of the $160 billion dollars spent on remodeling in
2001, more than half was spent on the outdoors. In addition, she adds, sales of
built-in grills are up a full third since 2000 and pre-fabricated island sales
continue a strong upward trend.
FACT:
In a recent Outdoor Room
Tracking Study sponsored by Weber-Stephen, nearly half (44 percent) of the
$75,000-plus outdoor room-deprived households surveyed were interested in
having an outdoor kitchen, so it is apparent that this is not a fad. That view
is corroborated by the high satisfaction level of actual outdoor kitchen owners
polled: More than a third says this space adds to their quality of life. It's
an investment that adds value to a home, and homeowners can enjoy it with their
family.
FACT:
Outdoor rooms are a growing
trend across the U.S. Pool and spa stores report that about 90% of their
customers want an outdoor kitchen facility as part of their new installations.
FACT:
The U.S. Census Bureau
advises that consumers now spend upwards of $40 billion annually on upgrading
outdoor living areas and garden amenities. Also, Hearth & Home magazine
writes that more than two-thirds of the 3,200 hearth, patio and barbecue
specialty retail stores now actively promote the outdoor room concept, most of
them year-round.
The term "outdoor
room" is an unbranded phenomenon that ties together all the components of
the casual outdoor lifestyle, and as such the concept is larger than the sum of
its parts. Consider these other facts:
FACT:
In 2002,
FACT:
The number of second homes is
projected to double by the year 2010 (to 10 million).
FACT:
American consumers spent in
excess of $3 billion last year on outdoor furnishings, nearly $3 billion more
on barbecue grills, equipment and accessories, and another $20+ billion on new
pools and spas.
FACT:
Outdoor hearth products, such
as chimineas, fire pits and portable heaters are selling at all-time highs.
Whatever the demographic buzz word,
FACT:
The Hearth, Patio &
Barbecue Association (HPBA), in its 2003 bi-annual survey of consumer attitudes
and lifestyles, reports significant intention to upgrade outdoor cooking areas.
Approximately 30% of barbecuing homeowners plan to upgrade and/or expand their
barbecuing environment and that can directly translate to new orders for
modular outdoor kitchen kits.
